How We Spent Our Summer Vacation (Part 1): Friday Family Movie Night

We spent our summer vacation much like most families with school-aged children do.  We traveled, we slept in, we watched too much TV, we swam, we went to the movies and we did an immense amount of pretend play.

This summer I started a new routine, which has been so well-received we have continued with it:  Friday Family Movie Night.  I don't know how I came up with Friday Family Movie Night (FFMN), but it is genius.  The concept is simple:  I wrote about a dozen of our favorite family-friendly movie titles on separate slips of paper, folded them up and put them in a plastic bowl.  Each Friday, after dinner, clean-up and jammies, the kids bring out their pillow pets, blankets, lovies, etc. and situate themselves in the living room.  We take turns each week drawing a title out of the bowl and that is the movie we watch.  It has been a great way to watch movies in our DVD collection that we haven't seen in quite some time and more importantly, there is no fighting over what movie to watch.  Once the movie begins, I make the snacks--usually popcorn & chocolate for Leah and nachos and cookies for Aaron.  We all watch together but I must admit, Matt and I are sometimes not as engaged as the kids in watching, depending on the title.

The kids love FFMN so much that we continued the routine even after school started.  They look forward to it at the end of every week.  I think Leah likes it mostly for the snacks; Aaron, for the opportunity to stay up late.  Sometimes Friday Family Movie Night has to change to Saturday Family Movie Night depending on our schedule.  We don't do it if the kids have to be up early the next morning.

We've just about been through all our movies.  It might be time to start streaming some Netflix movies.  Christmas is around the corner so maybe we'll start adding some holiday movie classics to the mix.  Or knowing the kids, we'll just start over re-watching the favorites.

Leah loves to draw the movies and often has to be
reminded to take turns.
Cars 2 is one of Aaron's favorite movies.
Mmmmm...movie snacks!
