Tonight after dinner I got a real treat for dessert. I was relaxing on the couch when my 4-year-old
son walked into the living room wearing a pink princess dress, complete with pink tiara, pink purse and white light-up heels. (Accessories do make the outfit.) I did what any mother would do and told him "Oh, what a pretty princess!" I was quickly rebuked by Leah, who was busy at work in the kitchen working on her dry erase board. She told me they were going to put on a fashion show for me and that I couldn't look. Fine by me. I started watching a syndicated
30 Rock episode I had never seen before. (For
30 Rock fans, it was the one where Tracy was a contestant Discovery Channel's
Cash Cab trying to reach the hospital where his wife was giving birth.) A short time later, Leah started the "show." This included her displaying the poster she had created.

| "Aaron: Princess in disguise." |
The title seems to be a play on the Mercy Watson book by Kate DiCamillo (
Mercy Watson Princess in Disguise). And just as it is funny to see a pig go trick-or-treating in a princess costume, it is equally funny watching Aaron navigate the living room in high heels. (In his defense, since our floors are not carpeted, it can be very slippery.) I don't know if this detail is important, but I also found it funny that he had stuffed Leah's purse with plastic fruits and vegetables. I guess it would have been even funnier if he would have stuffed it with Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars.

This whole event lasted for about five minutes after Leah had presented her poster. After that, Aaron took off the costume and played with his Star Wars Angry Birds minifigures. It was fun while it lasted.

Perhaps more gender-neutral costumes should be on our horizon? |
